Goal Setting Phase 2: What do I need to do today to become her?
Hello
again. If you started this journey with me then, welcome to phase two: What do
I need to succeed at my goals? If you are just joining the train, then I encourage
you to go through phase one it is always a very good place to start.
I
have always found that it is one thing to set goals but accomplishing them is a
totally different ball game. It requires a good degree of focus and hard work
to push forward and achieve those goals. So, I set my goals, and then took some
time to envision the future me. Painting a picture of who I wanted to become
made the goals seem more real and achievable. P.S., it is totally okay to start
with bite-size goals, setting goals you can easily accomplish is a great way to
encourage yourself to realize them and do even more (do not forget to
congratulate yourself along the way).
Anyways,
now that I had set my SMART goals the next thing was to find out how to achieve
them. So, I made a list of the things I could do to assist me in achieving
these goals. Were there books I needed to read or videos to watch? Did I have
to sign up for any courses? Were there external resources I needed to key into?
I journaled everything I needed.
Then
I had to do another interesting bit of research. What did I need to get rid off
to achieve my goals? Life can be full of distractions. Sometimes even life
itself can be a distraction (that is why we have me time). At other times we
carry a lot of baggage that weighs us down and we just need to let go of it to
move forward. And do not get me started on clutter. I used to be a horrible
collectomaniac. I kept everything in my head and in my life. I could not let go
off anything till one time when I had an epiphany and realized I did not have
to give space in my life to everything. Some things just were not worth the
space (but I digress).
So
I took time to identify the things I did and did not need to become the version
of myself I wanted to see in a few years time and then I broke that list
further down into the little things I could do every single day to get me
closer to where I wanted to be. That way when I wake up each morning, I can ask
myself: what can I do today that will draw me nearer to achieving my goal and
make me who I want to become. Knowing there is something I can do everyday
towards my goal helps me stay focused and helps my goals feel more real and
reachable.
Did
I inspire you to achieve those goals you wrote down, have I made it look more
reachable for you? Do remember to share your comments and stay with me as we
journey into phase three: Who do I need to make my accountability partner on
this expedition of discovering who I can be? There you have it, phase two of
getting to the future me completed! And remember the words of American
Industrialist, Henry Ford “Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into
small jobs”.
